MindPath Health Makes Another Acquisition, Expands Into Arizona

On the heels of a company rebrand, MindPath Health is closing out 2021 with more expansion, as it has purchased Chandler, Arizona-based Metropolitan Neuro Behavioral Institute (NBI).

The acquisition marks MindPath Health’s entry into Arizona, where it will add nine behavioral health clinics operated by Metropolitan NBI. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to expand Mindpath Health and plant a flag in Arizona with the acquisition of reputable and like-minded Metropolitan Neuro Behavioral Institute,” Mindpath Health CEO Christopher Brengard said in a press release.

Metropolitan NBI offers a variety of services to patients including counseling, psychiatric medication management, psychological testing and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the measurement of neurological function.

Metropolitan NBI’s services are complementary to those provided by MindPath, which additionally offers services like substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, psychiatry and psychiatric interventions including esketamine (also known as Sparavato).

The Metropolitan NBI purchase is the latest milestone of a banner 2021 for Sacramento, California-based MindPath Health, which started off the year as Community Psychiatry before acquiring Durham, North Carolina-based MindPath Care Centers in May.

The deal for MindPath Care added over 25 facilities to Community Psychiatry’s fold, as it became the operator of more than 75 locations throughout California and the Southeast. The newly-combined company has since expanded into Florida, Ohio and Texas.

Recently, the company rebranded itself as MindPath Health, which Brengard said is reflective of the company’s ambitions of moving from a regional behavioral health player to one with a national reach.

“Community Psychiatry, I think we all felt was somewhat limiting in the description of the services that we were actually giving to our patients, as well as any expansion of services that we continue to strive towards going forward,” Brengard recently told Behavioral Health Business.

Brengard was named CEO of MindPath in February, and at the time he talked of how the company — which received an infusion of strategic capital investments in the fourth quarter of 2020 — had designs on expanding outside of California.

“We’re evaluating which markets around the country that we think we can best serve and best have an impact,” Brengard told BHB in February. “As we identify those markets, we’ll look to see if we can find high quality providers to partner with.”

The purchase of Metropolitan NBI, according to the press release, is the first of a number of planned MindPath Health locations in Arizona.

“Mental health is key to the overall health and well-being of all individuals, and we look forward to working diligently to provide comprehensive, integrated care and individualized mental health treatment in Arizona, an important area of our continued growth,” Brengard added in the press release.

Dr. Lauro Amezcua-Patino, who is the president and medical director of Metropolitan NBI, will stay on with the newly-purchased provider in leadership and clinical roles.
