New York-Based Hybrid Provider Resilience Lab Adds 2 New States to Its Footprint

Resilience Lab continues its 2022 expansion by launching services in two more states.

The New York City-based hybrid mental health provider exclusively told BHB it has expanded into Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. This brings the company’s state footprint up to five states.

CEO Marc Goldberg and Chief Clinical Officer Christine Carville founded the company in July 2019. Resilience Lab now employs more than 250 people, 200 of which are providers, Goldberg told BHB in an interview.

As of mid-January, Goldberg told BHB the company had 117 providers. Today’s 200 number marks at least a 71% increase in Resilience Lab’s provider count.

In March, the company expanded services in New York, where it first launched, and expanded to New Jersey and Connecticut.

A year from now, he estimates the company will employ 500 people.

The company provides outpatient therapy services in-office and via telehealth. Resilience Lab has also developed its own internal tech stack. The tech automates non-clinical work. This better enables therapeutic alliance and team-based care, according to a news release.

Goldberg declined to detail how Resilience Lab financed the deal. He also declined to talk about how the company has so far been able to fund its growth.

Why Pennsylvania and Massachusetts?

Part of Resilience Lab’s mission is to expand access to therapy. So, it seeks in-network arrangements with health plans.

The company has a contract with UnitedHealthcare in these states, Goldberg said, adding Resilience Lab has other in-network relationships in the works.

Both Pennsylvania and Massachusetts have substantial populations as well. Combined, the states have about 20 million residents in total, according to 2020 census data. Pennsylvania is the fifth largest state in the union with about 13 million residents.

It also seeks to outpace the mental health clinician shortage by operating in these states.

“The states have amazing universities. We are connecting with the universities and hiring their graduates,” CEO Marc Goldberg said in an interview.

Resilience Lab’s long-term investments

In March, Resilience Lab established the Resilience Institute. The institute offers continuing education courses. The institute works with Amedco to get national board and New York board certifications for their courses.

Resilience Lab hopes to get a leg up on hiring through the university partnerships and the institute.

“We’re defining a fundamental, year-long program that sort of helps people understand” how to work in a team, Carville said. “We’re really looking to uplevel all of these professionals so that there’s more equity from the payer standpoint.”

Carville added that these partnerships and investments are also meant to foster greater care quality and trust. These are key to continued relationships with payers, she said.

The company also centers care around outcomes. Resilience Lab announced in June a partnership with Mirah, a Boston-based tech company, to measure outcomes. Resilience Lab has integrated Mirah’s measurement-based care services into its clinical workflow.
