Addiction Treatment Provider BrightView Health Names New Chief Medical Officer

Cincinnati-based addiction treatment provider BrightView Health has named Dr. R. Corey Waller as its new chief medical officer.

The move also marks the transition of one of its founders to a new role with the company.

Waller succeeds BrightView Health co-founder Dr. Shawn Ryan in the chief medical officer role. Ryan now has the title of chief science officer and president of advocacy and external relations. His role will focus on policy advocacy, according to a news release.

CEO Chad Smith co-founded BrightView Health with Ryan and Ray Compagna in 2015. The company focuses on outpatient addiction treatment services. These include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), individual and group counseling, peer recovery support and wraparound social support services.

“When we founded BrightView in 2015, our vision was to radically improve the addiction medicine vertical,” Ryan said in the release. “Dr. Waller joining our team is another major step to continue realizing that vision. We have the right frameworks, analytical power, and sample sizes in place, and with Dr. Waller’s expertise and passion, I am excited to see where we go in the future.”

Waller comes to the role with more than two decades of experience in emergency and addiction medicine, research and advocacy. He will supervise medical staff development, treatment programming and outcomes evaluation.

His previous roles include managing director at Health Management Associates and director for the Center for Integrative Medicine at Spectrum Health Hospitals. He is also presently the editor-in-chief of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s guidelines handbook, The ASAM Criteria.

He will also have a role in BrightView Health researching and publishing the outcomes of its treatment efforts.

The company concurrently treats about 20,000 patients at 97 sites in Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

“Over the last several years, BrightView has constructed and tested several systems that have dramatically improved patient outcomes and care,” Chief Quality Officer Navdeep Kang said in the release. “Meanwhile, Dr. Waller has dedicated his career to building systems of care which finally rise to meet the challenges faced by our communities today.”

In August, BrightView Health announced it acquired Boston-based Column Health. That deal marks BrightView’s second acquisition in 2022. It also gave BrightView a presence in its second and third new state markets this year.

Chicago-based private equity firm Shore Capital Partners backs BrightView Health. It invested in BrightView Health in October 2017.

Last week, the PE firm Lee Equity Partner acquired addiction treatment provider Bradford Health. Acorn Health, an autism treatment provider owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, acquired seven treatment centers in Florida and in Virginia.
