Digital mental health startup Mantra Health has rejiggered several aspects of its leadership team, including a CEO change.
The company’s co-founders switched up their roles. The previous CEO, Ed Gaussen, is now the president — a newly created position — while former COO Matt Kennedy will take on the CEO role, according to a news release. The release does not articulate a specific reason for the change in the CEO role.
“Today we announced the biggest decision impacting our roles at Mantra since founding the company after much reflection and discussion,” Kennedy said on LinkedIn.
“Going through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship successfully takes a lot of integrity, dedication and resilience,” Gaussen said on LinkedIn. “Matt and I see eye to eye in these values, and I’m grateful for our relationship.”
Mantra Health’s press release states the company is at a “turning point,” and the leadership change is meant to accelerate its development.
As president, Gaussen will “serve as a champion and ambassador” for Mantra Health. He will focus on building relationships with partners, investors and industry experts.
As CEO, Kennedy will lead all functions of the company and direct the company’s long-term strategy.
Mantra Health is also changing up its clinical leadership, the release states.
Carla Chugani is now the vice president of clinical programs, formerly the vice president of clinical content and affairs. Chugani designed the company’s self-guided dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skill and coaching programs and will lead clinical strategy and oversee clinical research for the company.
Alicia Eggen joined the company as vice president of care operations at Mantra Health. Eggen previously served as the head of clinical projects and implementation and regional director of therapy practices for the hybrid therapy startup Two Chairs.
Nathaan Demers also joined Mantra Health as its new director of strategic partnerships after working as the vice president of clinical programs and strategic partnerships at Grit Digital Health. Demers will oversee integrating Mantra Health into services at college campuses.
Mantra Health partners with colleges to provide students with access to digital mental health services. It is presently operating at 110 campuses and serves over 800,000 students. Some of its clients include Pennsylvania State University, Miami Dade College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its clinical services include self-guided content, teletherapy, telepsychiatry and 24/7 emotional wellness support services.
Mantra Health announced it raised $22 million in January 2022 as part of a Series A round led by VMG Partners. In March, it announced a $5 million extension of the round.
In March, it expanded its partnership with Togetherall, an anonymous, clinically moderated digital community provider. Users of Togehterall have access to Mantra Health’s clinical services. Togetherall is, in turn, part of Mantra Health’s “Whole Campus Care” service.
“At Mantra Health, we’ll continue investing in building the strongest possible team to help solve the youth mental health crisis,” Kennedy said in the release. “Superior talent further improves our position today and for the years to come.”
