Aware Recovery Adds New COO to Evolving C-Suite, Announces New State Markets

Aware Recovery Care has named a new chief operating officer and revealed plans to expand its footprint.

On Monday, the Wallingford, Connecticut-based in-home addiction treatment provider announced Martha Mather has taken on the COO role. She is the third to hold the role in 2022 and will report to CEO Brian Holzer, according to a news release.

Prior to her appointment, Mather was CEO of Peace Hospital, a 261-bed psychiatric hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where she was an executive for 13 years. Peace Hospital is part of UofL Health Inc., the nonprofit health system associated with the University of Louisville.

Mather holds a master’s degree in mental health counseling and is clinically trained as a licensed professional counselor.

“There is no doubt that Aware is a special, mission-driven organization,” Mather said in the release. “I am very impressed with the leadership team that is in place, and I couldn’t be happier to be joining an organization that is making a tangible difference in the lives of those impacted by the disease of addiction.”

As many as 14.5% of Americans ages 12 and older have a substance use disorder, according to national survey data.

Mather’s appointment helps solidify Aware Recovery Care’s leadership team. The company has undergone a total reset of top executives under Holzer’s leadership as CEO. He took on the CEO role in April.

The leadership shakeup, in part, is meant to drive Aware Recovery Care’s shift to scale. The company announced Monday that it will soon begin offering services in Kentucky, bringing its state footprint to 10.

It also plans to launch in New York and Georgia and expand in five existing, but not specified, state markets in 2023, the release state.

“Adding Martha as COO helps position Aware for continued, robust growth,” Holzer said in the release. “Martha is a seasoned executive with a 20+ year track record working in behavioral health and leading high-performing teams. I am excited to have her directing operations and expansion efforts nationwide and serving as an executive thought partner.”
