Elevance Health’s Beacon Health Options Rebrands to Carelon Behavioral Health, to Consolidate Payer’s Portfolio of Services

Beacon Health Options is furthering its connection with parent company Elevance Health (NYSE: ELV) by rebranding to Carelon Behavioral Health.

Carelon is the name of Elevance’s health service division. This comes roughly three years after Elevance Health, previously Anthem, purchased behavioral health operator Beacon.

“The new healthcare services brand Carelon consolidates the company’s existing broad portfolio of capabilities and services businesses under one brand to address the most complex healthcare challenges and support clients and consumers across the entire healthcare continuum,” Glenn MacFarlane, CEO of Carelon Behavioral Health, told Behavioral Health Business in an email.

The name “Carelon” is derived from the word “care” and suffix “lon,” meaning full and complete, MacFarlane noted.

“The name Carelon stands for the importance of providing full and complete care,” he said. “Carelon will serve one in three people in the U.S.”

Boston-based Carelon Behavioral Health serves more than 58 million members nationwide. It boasts more than 115,000 network providers and 40 Fortune 500 clients. It works with health plans, employers, government agencies, providers and individuals.

Its services include stress and anxiety management, diagnostic screening, therapy and counseling, wellness and recovery services, medication management, and healing from trauma and abuse.

The rebranding signals that the company is further integrating into Carelon’s physical and behavioral health services continuum.

At the time of its acquisition, Elevance Health said the purchase was made to “enhance whole person care.”

“Carelon will build better care for people and enhance efficiencies systemwide,” MacFarlane said. “Through partnerships across health care, Carelon will improve outcomes and reduce total cost of care through digitally enabled solutions to improve whole health.”
