Recovery Centers of America Hires Aetna Vet to Lead Mental Health Expansion

Recovery Centers of America hired two new executives to lead its expanding mental health services business.

On Tuesday, the King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based addiction treatment center provider named Dr. Hyong Un as chief medical officer and Dr. Peter Vernig as vice president of mental health services, according to a news release.

The addiction-focused provider is expanding its outpatient services to treat patients with a mental health disorder as a primary diagnosis.

Un was the chief psychiatric officer for Aetna, a part of CVS Health Inc. (NYSE: CVS), and led the creation of Aetna’s behavioral health program for the insurer’s more than 1 million health providers across the nation.

Un received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Un will lead the development and implementation of Recovery Centers of America’s company-wide integrated behavioral health strategy. This includes the company’s expansion into outpatient mental health and RCA’s inpatient and outpatient SUD services.

“RCA’s vision for integrated behavioral health services is accessible, precise and personalized,” Un said in the release. “World-class mental health care demands precision with diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery. All three elements have to align to meet the patient where they are with their recovery needs and their readiness to change.”

Vering will oversee the expansion of mental health care across the organization including outpatient, inpatient, and digital health. Prior to joining Recovery Centers of America, Vernig was chief clinical officer at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the country.

“We have seen the need for mental health services grow exponentially,” Vering said in the release. “This was happening prior to the COVID pandemic, and the fear, isolation, and uncertainty of the past several years has accelerated this trend. We have developed new RCA programs to help our patients address their mental health needs whether they have a substance use disorder or not.”

The new outpatient mental health business will address bipolar, depressive, anxiety, trauma, personality disorders and will be in-network with many private health plans, the release states. The new service offers both in-person and digital offerings and operates on a hybrid model.
